If I had to guess, I’d say the ‘Spaceball’ moniker was an invention by author Irwin Stambler for his book rather than a Douglas designation.

The Apollo Telescope Mount was initially conceived as a solar telescope built into an Apollo CSM, then an Apollo LM.

Designed in the mid-1960s, the Orbital Workshop was a space station intended to be built around the spent S-IVB rocket stage of a Saturn IB.

Originally a ‘wet workshop’ in 1969 NASA planned for a ‘dry workshop’ that would include a cluster comprising the OWS, ATM, and the Apollo Mapping and Surveying System. The final configuration became known as Skylab.

NASA developed a kit to modify an Apollo command module with two additional crew couches, providing a crew rescue capability. An issue during Skylab 3’s mission prompted NASA to begin fitting out CSM 119 as a rescue vehicle, and crew preparation. Onboard workarounds made the rescue flight unnecessary.

NASA developed a tug in the late 1970s to re-boost Skylab for use by the Space Shuttle Program.

In 1970, Douglas proposed a follow-on Skylab design in based on the S-IVB that would accommodate larger crews.
