S75-25941 (April 1975) — An Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) symbolic painting by artist Bert Winthrop of Rockwell International Space Division, Downey, California. The artwork is composed of the ASTP mission insignia, the docked Apollo-Soyuz spacecraft, and portraits of the five ASTP prime crewmen, all superimposed against Earth’s sphere in the center of the picture. The launches of both the American ASTP space vehicle (on left) and the Soviet ASTP space vehicle are depicted in the lower right corner. The five crewmen are, clockwise from the ASTP emblem, astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, commander of the American crew; astronaut Donald K. Slayton, docking module pilot of the American crew; astronaut Vance D. Brand, command module pilot of the American crew; cosmonaut Valeriy N. Kubasov, engineer on the Soviet crew; and cosmonaut Aleksey A. Leonov, commander of the Soviet crew. The joint U.S.-USSR ASTP docking mission in Earth orbit is scheduled for July 1975.

Extended Apollo

An “extended” Apollo would be able to travel for several months in space. Garrett concepts of environmental system, cryogenic storage, life-support and attitude control can be adapted to this vehicle.

Apollo X

The Marquardt Corporation is conducting studies under contract to North American’s Space and Information Systems Division on advanced rocket reaction control systems for Apollo X. The Extended Apollo Mission is depicted above in conjunction with a space laboratory system, one of several concepts to determine additional applications of the Apollo spacecraft by NASA. Marquardt’s four-engine reaction control system cluster is illustrated above on the surface of the Apollo X service module. Similar systems are being developed by Marquardt for the current Project Apollo lunar mission on both the service and lunar excursion module.

SOYUZ 16 CONCEPT —- An artist’s concept depicting the Soviet Soyuz 16 spacecraft in Earth orbit. The six-day Soyuz 16 Earth-orbital mission flown December 2-8, 1974, was a Soviet rehearsal for the joint U.S.-USSR Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. The crew of Soyuz 16 was Cosmonauts Anatolly V. Filipophenko, commander; and Hikolay H. Rukavishnikov, engineer. These two me are the Soviet ASTP second (back-up) crew, also. The three major components of the Soyuz spacecraft are the sphere-shaped orbital module, the decent vehicle (in center), and the instrument assembly module. Two solar panels extend out from the IA module. A docking mechanism to test the Soviet ASTP androgenous docking system (seen attached to the orbital module) was flown on the Soyuz 16 flight. This picture was made from a frame of 35mm motion picture film.

ASTP Docking

S74-24913 (August 1973) — An artist’s concept illustrating an Apollo-type spacecraft (left) about to dock with a Soviet Soyuz-type spacecraft. A recent agreement between the United States (USA) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) provides for the docking in space of the Soyuz and Apollo-type spacecraft in Earth orbit in 1975. The joint space venture is called the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP).
